![]() You get twice as many resources with cities than with settlements. You are eligible to get resources from any biome adjacent to your settlement or city. Lastly, development cards cost a sheep, wheat, and stone.Īt the beginning of the game, everyone has two settlements and a road. Cities cost two wheat and three stone (you must upgrade a settlement, you may not just build a city). Settlements cost a brick, wood, wheat, and sheep. There are four items you can buy: a road, a settlement, a city, and a development card. Now that you know about how players can gain and trade resources in Settlers of Catan it is time to talk about what you can do with those resources. ![]() While you can always trade with other players, boat trading allows you to sometimes get better deals if your fellow players are stubborn and also guarantee that you didn’t just trade your friend the sheep they needed to build a settlement in the spot you were going for. Others decrease it all the way down to a two but offer this bargain for only one specific resource. Some decrease the amount of resources needed to trade from four to three. While you can always trade four of any one resource for a single alternative resource, ships may offer cheaper alternatives. ![]() If you do not have easy access to a biome, you may have easy access to a trading ship. The last thing you need to know about is trading ships. Therefore, biomes with numbers closer to the middle are more useful and sought after. In general, numbers closer to seven are more common and twos and twelves are very rare. There is one exception to this rule: if you roll a seven, you are instead required to rob a player of your choice of one random resource. Players who have a settlement on the board next to a token that equals to the sum of those dice get resources from that biome. At the beginning of each player’s turn they roll two dice. One number token is placed on top of each biome except for the desert. Each resource is used for various tasks which we’ll get into later. The resources produced are sheep, wheat, wood, brick, and ore. Catan’s board has six distinct biomes, each producing one type of resource, except the desert biome which doesn’t produce any resources.
